Everything You Need to Know About Our Daruma
What does a Daruma doll symbolize?

The Daruma (達磨) is a Japanese symbol of perseverance, good fortune and commitment to a goal. Its rounded form embodies the proverb 七転び八起き (nanakorobi yaoki), meaning “fall seven times, rise eight,” and serves as a reminder to keep moving forward after every setback.

How do I use my Daruma to set a goal?

Choose one clear goal and place your Daruma somewhere you will see it regularly. If your model has blank eyes, fill in the Daruma’s left eye (the eye on your right when facing it), as you set your intention. Complete the other eye once your goal has been achieved. If the eyes are already painted, simply use the Daruma as a daily visual reminder of your commitment.

What does the color of my Daruma mean?

Color meanings can vary slightly by maker. Red traditionally represents good fortune; gold or yellow, prosperity; blue, achievement and focus; white, peace and new beginnings; black, protection and business success; green, health and growth; pink, love; and purple, longevity. Choose the color whose intention best matches your goal.

Where should I place my Daruma?

Place your Daruma somewhere visible and connected to your intention: on a desk for work or study, near an entryway for a new beginning, or on a shelf in a meditation or living space. Keep it on a stable, dry surface away from edges, moisture and prolonged direct sunlight.

Yuki Sato, founder of Japanese Decor, in her washitsu workroom

Hi, I'm Yuki, founder of

A room changes when one object in it is right. Not a whole Japanese interior, and nothing that needs explaining: one lantern that softens the evening light, one bowl you actually eat from, one print on a wall you walk past every day. I choose every piece myself, and I keep only the ones that still look right after a month of ordinary use.

Every order leaves here wrapped by hand, with a note. If something arrives wrong, write to me and we will put it right.
