Black wood frames a square of white sand. Curved lines flow around the corners like a slow current. Two small koi swim through it, one at each end, as if they followed the water from the start. A golden paper crane rests near an old stone bridge. Further on, a dark pebble, a round ball of moss and a stone lantern complete the scene. Much of the sand stays empty. In Japan, that empty space is called ma, and it matters as much as what fills it.
The crane is an orizuru, the origami bird of hope. Legend says that folding a thousand of them makes a wish come true. The koi stands for courage, because it swims against the current until it reaches its goal. Together they turn this tray into a quiet wish for strength and peace. Rake the lines around the koi, then smooth them out and start again. A few minutes are enough to clear the head before a call or at the end of a long day. It brings calm to a desk, a bedside table or a reading nook.
