A square black base holds a round basin split in two curved halves. One side is filled with smooth black pebbles. The other glows with small stones in amber, rose, green and white. Behind them, a Buddha in black and gold sits on a lotus throne, hands resting in calm. In the corner, a tiny black censer waits for a stick of incense.
The two halves follow the old idea of in yo, the Japanese name for yin and yang. Dark and light, stillness and movement, each needs the other to exist. In Japanese gardens, stones are called the bones of the garden. Each ishi is placed with care, because it holds the strength and silence of the mountain. The lotus rises clean from muddy water, a symbol of the mind that stays pure in a busy world. Light incense in the small koro, move a pebble from one side to the other and watch the balance shift.
